Link Up: Hairogenous

To be heterogeneous is to be unique, diverse and different.  As we are all uniquely created, so is our hair.  The amount of creativity is beyond measure and the variance is just pure genius.  While natural hair seems to be the trend right now, I really believe it is a movement.  A movement in the direction of self acceptance, self love and the appreciation and ownership of our own unique beauty.

That’s not to say that relaxed hair is not all of those things, but there is a certain kind of freedom and love – a real live love affair – that goes along with being a natural girl.

Lets’ link up and have a hair party.  Post a picture of yourself with a favorite hairstyle and details about the style, products used, etc.

I used my hands, and now I am all twisted up…

So I have been playing in my hair again, and this time I used my fingers.  I was inspired to twist my own hair a few weeks ago.  I figured how hard could it be to comb twist my own hair right?

WRONG!

After two rows on one side, I realized I had set myself up for total failure and even with help it wasn’t gonna work out.

I was slightly discouraged, but I figured I would resort to paying someone to do it (which might I add that one of the reasons I went natural was to avoid beauty salons).  The other part of that is the time factor; when will I really have time to go sit for hours to get my hair twisted up?  How long would it last? And would it be worth it?

Natural hair – an acquired taste…

I have come to realize that not everyone is into the whole natural thing, or even understand it for that matter.  For me, I love the versatility in it, the low maintenance (depending on what kind of natural you are – lol) and just the overall “freedom to be me” of it.

Recently I was having a conversation with a lady at church who was telling me how much she loved my hair.  She was complimenting the color and just how fast it has grown.  As long as I have known her (which hasn’t been more than 2 years), she has been natural as well.  She went on to ask what my husband felt about my hair and how I wear it.

Whelp people, I reached my point where I was ready to experiment and boy did I?!?!

Not only did I try a new style but I made my own product (if you count combining other products to fit your needs as making your “own”) to style it with.

Although my hair is still on the short side, I was able to grip it just enough to get me some imitation two strand twists in it.  My intention was to do this and then unravel it the next day to rock a “twist out”.

This is what my twists looked like:

So I decided that I would post a hair update. there seems to be some changes happening with my curls.  Most obviously, I dyed my hair a not so red, red. I was really nervous that it would change my texture, but it seems to be holding true to form.  Prior to coloring it, it just seemed so dry; in large part due to my natural color – dusty brown.

I have tried a few new products on it, most notably the shea moisture curl enhancing smoothie, and I haven’t been let down.  I’m still using with my coconut oil but I am thinking of trying the jojoba oil – I hear it’s better, plus last time I used it hubby asked “whats that smell?” with his nose turned up. (I’ll keep you posted)

Overall, I am still having a love affair with my hair. I’m loving my curls, color and the overall ease of it.  I’m including some pictures so you see what I’m working with.
